Barefoot Toward Heaven

For Jake Foster, falling in love frequently involves at least a little bit of pain, perhaps because the majority of his life has been spent in love with the same woman. Lizzie Lavin has always been the sum total of his desires. She’s both intelligent and beautiful, and has provided Jake with a host of lessons throughout the course of their two lives. But no one has ever been able to hurt him quite as much as she could, and now she has done so again.

Lizzie has left Jake for good. After their separation is finalized, he spends a day looking back on their relationship, wondering how it came to the point where he finds himself. Through a series of flashbacks, he examines the love he thought he had, hoping to find some means of comfort at its loss. Everything happens for a reason, Lizzie used to say. It’s now up to Jake to find out just what that reason might be.
