A poor college student works nights as a houseman in a backgammon club. He depends upon his earnings to support himself.
Backgammon is usually played for money. Thus, Backgammon attracts certain unsavory individuals. He plays a tournament against a guy who’s suspected of being a traveling cheater. The guy suddenly appeared in town and is cleaning up low level tournaments. He can’t make much money playing low level tournaments, but he has to start at low level, before he’s allowed to play in the big money events.
The poor college student has done some research, before the match against the cheater. He's as prepared as he can be. He also enlists the psychological help of the backgammon club regulars.
One of the backgammon ladies stays to talk with him a bit. She's a pretty good backgammon player. However, the cheater guy destroyed her with a bunch of very unlikely rolls. She not only had to put up with losing money, but one of her competitors gave her a lot of mouth and, as a result, she has a substantial sum bet on the poor college guy. If he wins, She’ll see that he "gets a night that he’ll remember for a long time.”
With a lot riding on the outcome, the poor college student plays against the suspected cheater.
