The idea for this anthology originated on an online social network called LinkedIn, which is designed to allow professionals to form groups so they can share like interests. One of these networking groups is Aspiring Writers, created to encourage and inspire both new and experienced authors.
Members can participate in discussions and writing competitions to help polish their writing skills, with the added benefit of professional advice from the group. The competitions are not only a learning experience, but also a fun opportunity to befriend other members.
Each month, the moderator announces a challenge. Participants have two weeks to write a story with a maximum length of 715 words. The story must conform to a particular genre and theme, and feature a highlight (often an object), all announced as part of the challenge.
The reward for the winners in these monthly competitions is to have their stories published in a yearly anthology, with proceeds donated to a charity. For 2011, the charity selected is the Office of Letters and Light, organizers of NaNoWriMo, Script Frenzy, the Young Writers Program, and Camp NaNoWriMo. These are events where children and adults find the inspiration, encouragement, and structure they need to achieve their creative potential. OLL's programs are web-enabled challenges with vibrant real-world components, designed to foster self-expression while building a community on local and global levels.
This book is the second in an ongoing series of anthologies--collections that display the talents of aspiring writers from around the globe. Some talents may be more outstanding than others, but all the authors have one thing in common. They have been inspired to write in response to a challenge, and have won the right to be recognized!
