Venerable Father Walter Ciszek

Who was Venerable Father Walter Ciszek? Walter Ciszek was born in 1904 to Polish immigrants who settled in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. He was a fighter and gang member who seemed more destined for reform school than for the seminary. But while still in his teens, Walter experienced a call to the priesthood. He channeled his remarkable energy and stamina into learning how to walk with God and how to serve His people. Now ordained a priest, Father Ciszek heard a second call to go to Russia to minister to the persecuted Christians there. Father Ciszek managed to journey in Russia, but not at all in the way he had planned. His life in Russia took many strange turns, but Father Ciszek was to find that God called him to serve the people who were most abandoned, who needed the loving kindness of Christ most of all.

Meet this prisoner for Christ in, Anything for a Mass.

Why read a biography of a saint? A saint is an ordinary person with an extraordinary love of God and neighbor, who now is happy to behold the Face of God in Heaven. We all need the inspiration of good example. Saints inspire us to live a more selfless life, relying on the merits of Christ Jesus in order to become more like Him. Saints likewise inspire us to go to greater lengths to love God and our neighbor. Just knowing about them helps us draw closer to Christ.
