Andy Warhol was shot by a radical feminist at the studio he regularly called The Factory. Near Union Square the date was June 3, 1968. Warhol was busy opening his mail when the woman walked in dressed in a trench coat. She had a loaded weapon in one of its pockets. As usual the place was bustling with people coming in and out. The attempted assassin had a role in one of Warhol's films entitled "I, A Man". She was also a 1958 graduate of the University of Maryland. Valeria Solanis, a native of New Jersey, was the founder of SCUM, The Society for Cutting Up Men. .
