And Babies Make Seven is the story of a warm and courageous young woman overcoming great odds and, with intelligence and fortitude, living a full and giving life. Val Koning survived a car accident in 1970 that killed nine young people, but she was in a coma for eight weeks.

After recovering from that, she got married, and gave birth to natural quadruplets. With humour and much self deprecation she relates a story of lives well lived, horrendous events overcome and the triumph of love and happiness.

There is much detail in this book about child rearing, how to live a good marriage, how to run a household in the face of unusual challenges and how to work around disabilities, but it is managed with such a light hand and woven so seamlessly into the narrative that the reader absorbs it without effort.

It is difï¬ cult to write inspiring material and relate good news wrested from difï¬ cult setbacks without falling into cliché, self pity and perhaps smug self appreciation but she has managed to avoid all these quagmires admirably.

Anyone who is interested in survival stories, in love stories, or who would like to belong to a large and loving family for a while would greatly enjoy this book.
