Lek was born the eldest daughter to a lower middle-class family of rice farmers in northern Thailand. When her father died young and unexpectedly, the family found out that the farm was in hock to the bank.
They had to do something radical to save it, but the only idea that they could come up with was for Lek to go to work in her cousin's bar in Pattaya as a waitress.
However, Lek drifted into the tourist sex industry, where she languished for ten years, trying to get out of it again.
One day, a client, or boyfriend as they were known as in the trade, returned and sought her out. A few had before, but this one, Craig, seemed to mean it and she felt more than something for him too. They fell in love.
Her only problem was, could she ever function properly again as a loving wife or even girlfriend after ten years as a Pattaya bar girl?
She didn't even know whether Craig knew exactly what she had done for a living. He had never asked and she had never said. On the other hand, he had taken her to Wales and she had met his friends and family and they had had a wonderful time.
Now they were coming back to 'reality' in Thailand, although she was no longer sure that she knew what that meant any more.
Craig had promised her an exciting future.
Lek hoped that her old life would never come between them.
"An Exciting Future" depicts the problems that many, if not all, mixed race couples face in Thailand or even the world, if they are ever to be happy together.
