African Union has a bright future, although it has a bad history. It all began during the Congo Crisis in 1962/1963 when the African States started making some efforts to have one large organization that would strongly unite them. The Congo Crisis burst out because the people of Congo wanted independence, but the Belgians that colonized them were against that. When Belgium suddenly granted independence to Congo, there was an unhealthy rivalry among the ethnic groups in Congo. War broke out, the United Nations sent soldiers to Congo. The United Nations’ soldiers on peacekeeping turned against Patrice Lumumba, an African patriot and the then Premier of Congo. The African States tried to save Lumumba and help Congo, but these States did not succeed because they were not united. This book clearly explains the aims and objectives of African Union. It analyzes the AU Assembly and throws light on its functions. It appraises the AU Commission and sheds light on its functions. It evaluates the AU Executive Council. and casts light on its functions. It discusses the AU Permanent Representatives Committee and highlights its functions. It appraises the AU Pan-African Parliament and throws light on its functions. It examines the AU Peace and Security Council and outlines its functions. It investigates the AU Court of Justice and outlines its functions. It discusses the AU Economic, Social and Cultural Council and highlights its functions. It explores the achievements of African Union and points out the activities of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development. And it remains to be seen if the African Union possesses the verve and vigour that can conquer underdevelopment in Africa.
