An hilarious romantic comedy!
23-year old Mary Smythe-Berryman is thrown from her horse whilst hunting, and lying on the ground announces to best friend Brenda that she is to be married to 26-year old Joseph ('Joe') Pope. Because of her devout religious beliefs she is still a virgin.
Joe too is a virgin following a promise to 'wait until he was married' which he made as a teenager to his mother. As the following day his mother died, he has felt obliged to keep his promise.
But Joe and Mary's almost intolerably intense desires will only make the honeymoon sweeter - which, paid for by Mary's wealthy father, is a luxury cruise on board 'The Dream of Opulence', sailing from Southampton to the Mediterranean.
But mistakenly identified as a terrorist and detained, Joe misses the sailing - although Mary is already on board. Upon his release and a nightmare trip across the channel with a drunken French fisherman, Joe sets off in pursuit of his bride, driving an ancient rented Renault. He has many problems including two further arrests as he chases the ship to ports across France and Spain.
Meanwhile the ship has engine trouble, and is travelling slowly. As well as missing a husband, Mary has other problems, when her devout personal stewardess mistakes her sea sickness for morning sickness, although Mary tells her she is a virgin. But Kathleen is convinced she does have morning sickness, so could it be the second coming - a bizarre belief taken up by a group of nuns on board? Whilst two of the male ship's officers see Mary's virginal state as a challenge, and have a wager as to who will be the first to bed her.....
Also the best man and chief bridesmaid become an item, and pursue Joe overland hoping to help him. Whilst J.C. Bunting III, the CIA operative who identified Joe as a terrorist, is in hot pursuit across France and Spain with two MPs.
There's plenty more, plenty of romance and comedy, but to discover that, you must buy the book.....
