Sam Pendlebury’s father is always angry. Why? Sam discovers that his paternal grandfather was a convicted murderer who escaped custody and disappeared. In his aunt’s attic, Sam finds a diary in which his grandfather professes his innocence. There’s also a watch with a weird inscription suggesting Sam’s grandfather has gone back in Time to prove his innocence.

Can people go back in Time? Sam visits his next-door neighbour, a retired professor with access to his own wormhole. The professor shows Sam and his friend Emily, how to programme the computer that links him with the past, but warns that making changes to the past could have dire consequences.

After a terrible argument between Sam’s parents, Sam decides to find his grandfather and help clear the family name. Initially he travels alone, and at Circular Quay meets a young back packer called Vince. Only later does he realise that Vince has a motive for wanting to murder his grandfather’s business partner.

Emily joins Sam and is introduced to Wicker, the street urchin Sam has befriended. The three children take action that changes the course of history, but does this mean Sam will get his grandfather back? Will there be dire consequences? How will changing the past affect Sam’s, Emily’s and Wicker’s futures?
