Dead girls are the worst.

After their father's alleged death, strange things begin to happen in the Stillman home—explosive light bulbs, random alarms, and unexplainable power surges. After deciding to move, a little girl named Sophie approaches Charlie Stillman and knows more about the family than the average stranger, knowing family secrets nobody else has heard. Confused and alarmed, Charlie is enticed by the girl when she hints his father could be alive somewhere. The girl's pale skin, soft voice, and bright eyes make her seem so innocent. But is something more behind her? Little does Charlie know Sophie is in search of her killer, who left her blood-soaked in a roadside lake, and will use anyone to get to them.

On a breezy June night, it is the annual summer kick-off. The whole neighborhood gathers and celebrates the start of longer days, sunshine, and ice-hold lemonade—until things turn deadly. Vivian Claremen, the town’s wealthiest businesswomen, falls dead in plain sight without a scratch or bruise, and everyone is a suspect. Charlie and his sister Kate rush home to safety. In their yard, a stranger attacks from the bushes, claiming they killed his daughter, Sophie. Kate has no choice but to protect the two, and kills the man—rumored to have escaped from a mental hospital—in self-defense. Thinking nobody is watching, they bury the body and carry on, trying to convince themselves of their own innocence.

After Vivian’s death, Kate’s best friend, Michelle, goes missing and soon the town’s body count mysteriously rises—those closets to the Stillmans start dying off. Charlie and Kate find themselves framed, trying to explain their dad’s possible murder, and scared they will be next, all while one person knows the disturbing truth to the question in the dark: who is Sophie?
