Following the death of Earl Godwine of Wessex, things have changed in the kingdom of England. King Edward is determined to stabilise his realm even if it means co-operating with the children of his former adversary. While the king tries to salvage something from his damaged marriage, his brother-in-law Harold wonders if he can ever marry his handfasted wife properly with the blessing of the Church.

In Normandy, Duke William's own marriage remains unrecognised by the pope and William's miseries increase as King Henry, his overlord and the king of the Franks, reveals his aims to overrun Normandy and absorb it into France. For the duke, there seems to be no rest from the succession of battles he must fight, both on and off the field.

This historical novel is the third book in the series 'Crown in Conflict'. It is set between the years 1053-1060.
