Synopsis
Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel written by the English novelist George Orwell whose popular writings include "The Road to Wigan Pier", "Homage to Catalonia", and "Animal Farm".
After the deadly Global war, the world is divided into three superstates namely Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. Oceania's with ideology of English Socialism controls the territories of Western hemisphere, British Isles, Australasia and Southern Africa. Eurasia with ideology of Neo-Bolshevism controls the territories of Continental Europe and Russia. Eastasia with ideology of Death Worship controls the territories of China, Japan, Korea and Indochina. Perpetual war fought between the three superstates for their control over the remaining unoccupied territories such as Northern Africa, HongKong, Mangolia, India for utilizing the slave-labor.
The novel is set in Oceania with three political parties named Inner-Party, Outerparty and Proles. Inner-Party rules the state with four ministries named Ministry of Peace, Ministry of Plenty, Ministry of Love and Ministry of Truth. Much against the wishes of the Oceania rules the state with slogans of War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength and Love is Crime.
The protagonist Winston Smith is member of Outer-Party who is responsible for rewriting the historic records with articles favoring the Party. Julia, a young woman who maintains the novel writing machines confess her love to Winston. They are caught in the bedroom by the Thought Police. Winston is sent to "Room 101" the deadly interrogation prison in which he is tortured and brainwashed and was forced to betray Julia. Later he was freed and inducted to the Oceanic society. He encounters Julia again and understood she also gone through tortures and betrayed Winston. The novel ends up with news of Oceania's victory over Eurasian armies in Africa.
